Dr. Umesh Kumar’s research sits at the intersection of literature, translation, and cultural politics, grounded firmly in the multilingual realities of India. His work in Translation Studies goes beyond questions of linguistic equivalence to engage with how power, memory, and identity are negotiated in and through translation—especially in contexts marked by marginality and difference. He brings a deep attentiveness to modern Hindi and Marathi literature, particularly fiction, where he explores how writers respond to social transformations, political urgencies, and questions of form and voice. A parallel thread in his scholarship focuses on Indian children’s literature, not simply as a pedagogical tool, but as a vital cultural archive where nation, ethics, and imagination come together. Across all his writing—whether he is translating a Sahitya Akademi-winning poet, interpreting fiction, or reading the silences in children’s stories—his commitment is to texts that speak from the peripheries and ask us to rethink the centre.
